They have a house in Ballarat and Nick commutes to his farm, which is about 75km from Ballarat near the small town of Lismore.

For the past twenty-five years, Nick has been involved with his family’s farming business in rural Victoria, Australia. With his brother, Chris Shady, Nick turned the family farm from 2,000 acres to just over 5,500 acres, turning over millions of dollars per annum. In 2009, Nick and Chris separated their farming businesses and Nick has farmed by himself since then.

Nick is recognized as an expert in the areas of agricultural technologies, farm business management and succession planning.

Nick and Ayesha are the international authors of the book Who Gets the Farm A Practical Guide for Farm Succession Planning, which was published in 2016. They have a series of books planned around family farming.

Nick Shady has been appointed as a farmer representative to the Steering Committee for The Ripple (STRIDE) Effect Project. Nick has had a long standing interest in farmer mental health. He has personally been challenged by the loss of loved ones to suicide and he wants to help other farmers manage the stress and create better health and well being outcomes, especially for men in rural areas.

Nick is passionate about working with family farm businesses, teaching how to be successful, remain efficient, profitable, self-managed and most importantly stay together while navigating the changes in the agricultural industry.

He teaches how family farms can work the land in a sustainable and profitable manner, thereby maintaining and strengthening rural communities.

As a former executive member of the Victorian Young Farmers association Nicholas has conducted leadership training, mentored young members and initiated new clubs within the organization.

Nick is very active in his local community. He currently serves in various executive roles for the local district including the Beaufort & Skipton Health Service Foundation, the Skipton Recreation Reserve, and the Beaufort Branch of the Bendigo Bank. He served on the board of the Skipton Football & Netball Club for many years as well as the Skipton Tennis Club. He recently finished a term on the board of Sports Central in Ballarat.

Nick was the founding chairperson of the Friends of the RSL – Skipton Branch. Nick saw the need for change within the RSL due to the aging of the returned services people in the area. Nick worked with the Victorian RSL to initiate Australia’s first Friends of the RSL for communities who have a small number of returned service people or none at all, who still wanted to have an RSL presence. The resulting success of this initiative has seen the model utilized around the country.

Nick is also a passionate supporter of the Survivors of Suicide (SOS) and is donating a percentage of book sale profits to this cause as he is aware of the alarming suicide rate of amongst failing farms and the crippling effects they can have on families and the local community.

He has travelled extensively to over 10 countries including the United States of America, England, France, Germany, Belgium, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand just to name a few.
